Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
