Match Background
Forest vs Malmö and memories of 1979. The these sides have a historical link, also meeting in Forest's last European campaign in the mid-90s European competition, but it is the European Cup final from 1979 that links these clubs, with the record-breaking signing Trevor Francis heading the only goal of a rather dull championship game to clinch eternal glory for the red half of Nottingham.
"The legendary management duo, unassuming and low-key amid all the festivities and cheers, stood for a moment on a bench calmly observing the celebrations," wrote the match reporter. Theirs has been an outstanding achievement that it is unlikely to be replicated – from Second Division to European football in just three years."
Worth mentioning to reflect upon Malmö, who became the first, and to date the last Nordic team to make the championship match under British coach Houghton.
Tonight's game is a very different to that summit, closer perhaps to the earlier European encounter between Forest and Malmö in 1995-96. Forest are full of confidence after thrashing Liverpool at the famous ground on Saturday, while Malmö have been inactive since 9 November following the completion of Allsvenskan. The general expectation is on the English side tonight.
Additional games on offer in this clockwatch. Rangers have already been defeated by a Portuguese opponent this season. Rangers are at the foot of the league rankings at the middle of the league phase with no points whatsoever. They badly want a victory if they are to have any chance of achieving a recovery for a qualification place.
