In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
