An underground economy for unapproved weight-loss medications is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Express Worries
However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering products of unknown origin.
Some experts stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several influencers try to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or imprisonment.
Platform Reaction and Material Elimination
Based on TikTok, the platform has removed violative material and banned associated keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Digital Trading Operations
Research also discovered communities with up to nine thousand members marketing retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, filled with photos of weight loss, positive testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at residence.
Within moments of joining one community, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.
Product Details and Costs
Inside these groups, posts show dark colored parcels with postal service stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between powder vials, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Security Measures
A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly moderated harmful material on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Cautions
“Individuals are injecting substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind this drug is valid, these online versions may not include what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she explained.
Her team has already encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Statement
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
